Program Overview
Introduction to the HVAC/R Program
The Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVAC/R) program is designed to meet the demand for skilled technicians in the industry. The climate in New Mexico creates a need for professionals who can install, maintain, and repair heating and cooling systems in various settings, including homes, hospitals, universities, and office complexes.
Program Overview

- Service, repair, and maintain heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems
- Read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and symbols to diagnose and troubleshoot problems
- Evaluate, diagnose, and service various mechanical and electrical controls
- Apply mathematical concepts related to the HVAC/R trade
- Handle customer relations, shop management procedures, and record keeping
- Properly use special tools and testing equipment
- Become certified in Section 608, EPA Certification
Curriculum and Training
The program includes a one-credit Job Shadowing course, which allows students to observe the daily activities of a HVAC technician. A unique practicum training program is offered during the final semester, providing students with field experiences and the opportunity to work alongside journeymen technicians.
Requirements and Equipment
After the first semester, full-time students must purchase a personal set of technician's tools (approximate cost: $1300). Part-time students will purchase only the tools required for their specific courses. Additionally, students must purchase an iPad (approximate cost: $400) to access course materials and document completion of course competencies. Students are also responsible for providing their own medical/accident insurance.
Physical and Academic Requirements
Students must be in good physical condition and possess the ability and desire to work with their minds and hands. The curriculum is competency and performance-based, using multimedia classroom instruction and hands-on laboratory exercises. Students must earn a final grade of C- or better in all required HVAC courses and achieve a cumulative grade-point average of at least 2.0.
Licensure and Certification
Licensure for journeyman gas fitters, journeyman refrigeration workers, and journeyman sheet metal workers requires both a written and practical exam. Note that not all licensing agencies provide special testing accommodations.
Student Opportunities
All HVAC/R students are eligible to join SkillsUSA, which provides opportunities for leadership development, public speaking, and occupational skill demonstration. Skill competitions are conducted annually in New Mexico for post-secondary students.
Employment Requirements
Graduates may be required to work in inclement weather, lift up to 50 pounds, have good eye-hand coordination, and work safely around electrical hazards and with hand and power tools. They may also need to ascend and descend stairs and ladders, and stand, squat, stoop, or kneel for long periods.
