Program Overview


Introduction to the OEEM-Paramedic Program

The OEEM-Paramedic program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to become a paramedic. The program covers a wide range of topics, including patient assessment, trauma care, medical emergencies, and pharmacology.


Program Courses

The OEEM-Paramedic program consists of the following courses:


  • OEEM 101: CPR for the Health Care Professional: This course teaches students how to identify and respond to airway and circulation emergencies, including the use of a SAED and accessing the EMS system.
  • OEEM 103: Heartsaver First Aid/CPR: This course teaches students how to identify and respond to airway, circulation, and basic first aid emergencies, including the use of a SAED and accessing the EMS system.
  • OEEM 115: First Responder Prehospital Professional: This course provides training in prehospital medical and traumatic emergencies.
  • OEEM 120: Emergency Medical Technician Basic: This course teaches students the skills necessary to become an EMT-Basic, including care of soft tissue and muscular/skeletal injuries, circulatory, nervous, general medical, and respiratory emergencies.
  • OEEM 120L: Emergency Medical Technician Basic Lab: This course provides students with hands-on experience in developing EMT-Basic skills, including assessment, skills competency, and teamwork in patient care.
  • OEEM 121: Emergency Medical Technician Basic Field/Clinical: This course provides students with clinical experience in patient care, including assigned shifts in the hospital and/or ambulance setting.
  • OEEM 150: Emergency Medical Technician Intermediate: This course teaches students the theory of the roles, responsibilities, and scope of practice of the EMT-Intermediate, including assessment and management of respiratory, cardiac, trauma, environmental, behavioral, reproduction, and childhood emergencies.
  • OEEM 150L: Emergency Medical Technician Intermediate Lab: This course provides students with hands-on experience in developing EMT-Intermediate skills, including assessment, skills competency, and teamwork in patient care.
  • OEEM 151: Emergency Medical Technician Intermediate Field/Clinical: This course provides students with clinical experience in patient care, including assigned shifts in the hospital and/or ambulance setting.
  • OEEM 153: Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology for the EMS Provider: This course provides students with a solid foundation in human anatomy and physiology, including a systematic approach to building this foundation.
  • OEEM 155: Special Topics: This course covers specific topics related to the EMS profession, which are listed in the Schedule of Classes.
  • OEEM 177: Emergency Medical Services Instructor: This course teaches students the theory of student learning, methodology, instructional components, evaluation, and course coordination for the EMS profession.
  • OEEM 201: Human Systems, Pathophysiology, and Development: This course provides students with a survey of human anatomy and physiology, pathological processes, and life span development, including emphasis on interrelationships among organ systems and deviation from homeostasis.
  • OEEM 202: Airway and Respiratory Emergencies: This course teaches students how to develop and implement a comprehensive treatment plan for patients with airway and respiratory emergencies.
  • OEEM 202L: Airway and Respiratory Emergencies Lab: This course provides students with hands-on experience in developing skills related to airway and respiratory emergencies.
  • OEEM 203: Paramedic Trauma Care: This course teaches students how to assess and manage trauma patients, including the mechanism of injury, pathophysiology, diagnosis, assessment, treatment, and care of the trauma patient.
  • OEEM 203L: Paramedic Trauma Care Lab: This course provides students with hands-on experience in developing skills related to trauma care.
  • OEEM 206: Introduction to Paramedic Practice: This course introduces students to the advanced practice of prehospital medicine, including research, medical legal issues, and the wellbeing of the provider.
  • OEEM 207: Emergency Pharmacology: This course teaches students how to formulate a treatment plan intended to mitigate emergencies and improve the overall health of the patient, including physiologic actions, pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, therapeutic effects, medication administration, dosages, and interactions.
  • OEEM 207L: Emergency Pharmacology Lab: This course provides students with hands-on experience in developing skills related to emergency pharmacology.
  • OEEM 210: Cardiac Rhythm Interpretation: This course teaches students how to interpret cardiac rhythms, including the cardiac conduction system, electrophysiology, electrocardiogram, monitor, atrial, sinus, ventricular, and junctional dysrhythmias.
  • OEEM 212: EMT-Paramedic Cardiovascular Emergencies: This course teaches students how to assess and manage cardiovascular emergencies in the prehospital setting.
  • OEEM 213: EMT-Paramedic: Medical Emergencies I: This course teaches students how to assess and manage medical emergencies, including neurological, endocrine, gastrointestinal, renal emergencies, and infectious disease.
  • OEEM 214: EMT-Paramedic: Medical Environmental Emergencies II: This course teaches students how to assess and manage medical emergencies, including poisoning, drug and alcohol abuse, environmental, behavioral, and geriatric emergencies.
  • OEEM 216: EMT-Paramedic: Reproductive and Childhood Emergencies: This course teaches students how to assess and manage reproductive and childhood emergencies.
  • OEEM 218: Pediatric Advance Life Support for the Healthcare Professional: This course teaches students how to identify and respond to life-threatening pediatric emergencies.
  • OEEM 219: Advance Cardiac Life Support for the Healthcare Provider: This course teaches students how to identify and respond to life-threatening cardiac emergencies.
  • OEEM 230: EMT-Paramedic Clinical Experience I: This course provides students with clinical experience in patient assessment and specific management techniques.
  • OEEM 231: EMT-Paramedic Clinical Experience II: This course provides students with continued clinical experience in patient assessment and specific management techniques.
  • OEEM 240: EMT-Paramedic Field Experience I: This course provides students with advanced prehospital skills and knowledge.
  • OEEM 241: EMT-Paramedic Field Experience II: This course provides students with continued advanced prehospital skills and knowledge.
  • OEEM 242: EMT-Paramedic Field Internship: This course provides students with emphasis on total patient care responsibility and team leadership skills.
  • OEEM 243: EMT-Paramedic Preparation for Practice: This course provides students with comprehensive final program testing to prepare for the licensing examination.

Program Requirements

The OEEM-Paramedic program has the following requirements:


  • Students must have a minimum grade of C or better in all courses.
  • Students must complete all required courses and clinical experiences.
  • Students must pass a comprehensive final exam to graduate from the program.
