Program Overview

Program Overview

The postgraduate studies in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) aim to provide students with the current state of knowledge and skills in acquiring, processing, analyzing, sharing, and visualizing geographic data. The program is designed for employees of institutions and companies that work with geographic data, as well as for those interested in using GIS tools to solve spatial tasks.

Program Details

  • The program is addressed to workers of institutions and firms that have (or may have) to deal with geographic data, as well as to all interested in using GIS tools in their daily activities to solve spatial tasks.
  • Lectures will be conducted by the faculty staff and invited guests, specialists in the field of geographic information systems, geomatics, photogrammetry, and remote sensing, geodesy, and cartography, as well as environmental engineering.
  • Practical exercises (at computers) will make up about two-thirds of the classes and will be conducted using software from major commercial GIS manufacturers, as well as free and open-source software.

Curriculum

The curriculum includes:

  • Introduction to geographic information systems and spatial reference systems
  • Geographic data: basics of databases (SQL), sources of raster and vector data
  • GIS software: selected GIS software, spatial databases (SpatialSQL)
  • Cartography and geovisualization: elements of cartography
  • Spatial information infrastructure: INSPIRE directive, geospatial metadata, data exchange standards (XML), internet services for spatial data
  • Basic spatial analysis: analysis in vector and raster models, network analysis, geocoding
  • Advanced GIS tools: decision support systems (SDSS), graphical analysis models (ModelBuilder), elements of machine learning, basics of programming in Python
  • Preparation and submission of the final project

Graduate Profile

Graduates will have a general knowledge of the possibilities and principles of geographic information systems, enabling them to assess the usefulness of GIS in solving spatial tasks in the workplace. After completing the planned classes, participants will have the ability to acquire, process, analyze, share, and visualize geographic data and will be proficient in using GIS software.
