Program Overview
Introduction to the Metrology and Measurement Engineering Program
The Metrology and Measurement Engineering program is designed to address the anticipated increase in demand for highly qualified metrological personnel in Poland. This demand is driven by several factors, including the granting of research institution status to the Central Office of Measures and the transformation of the Office into the National Institute of Metrology, as well as the construction of the Laboratory Campus of the Central Office of Measures in Kielce.
Program Description
The program aims to provide students with specialized knowledge in the field of metrology. Due to the broad scope of metrology, the curriculum includes modules with diverse content. The implementation of the education process, with such a wide range of subjects, requires the involvement of experts with varied competencies.
Collaborating Institutions
The Metrology and Measurement Engineering program is conducted in cooperation with three Krakow-based universities:
- Akademia G¾rniczo-Hutnicza im. Stanisawa Staszica (AGH University of Science and Technology)
- Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Automatics, Computer Science and Electronics
- Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Robotics
- Politechnika Krakowska im. Tadeusza Kociuszki (Cracow University of Technology)
- Faculty of Mechanical Engineering
- Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering
- Uniwersytet Rolniczy im. Hugona Kotaja w Krakowie (Agricultural University of Krakow)
- Faculty of Production and Power Engineering
Curriculum
The curriculum includes a range of compulsory and elective courses. Compulsory courses cover topics such as:
- Precise measurements and standards
- Measurements of electrical energy parameters
- Statistical methods and measurement uncertainty
- Embedded systems
- Calibration of measurement apparatus
Elective courses allow students to specialize in areas like:
- Metrology of mechanical quantities
- Metrology of electrical quantities
- Coordinate metrology
- Acoustic metrology
- Sensors, transducers, and measurements of non-electrical quantities
Assessment and Verification
Courses are assessed through various methods, including exams, course credits, and project evaluations. The program also includes a diploma seminar and a diploma thesis, which are obligatory components of the curriculum.
Research Areas
The program covers a wide range of research areas, including:
- Metrology and measurement engineering
- Quality management in research and calibration laboratories
- Statistical analysis and uncertainty in measurements
- Embedded systems and their applications in metrology
- Calibration and verification of measurement equipment
Language Courses
As part of the program, students can choose from various language courses, including English, German, French, and Spanish, at the B2+ level.
Humanistic and Social Sciences
Students are also required to choose humanistic and social sciences courses, which are part of the university's core curriculum.
Conclusion
The Metrology and Measurement Engineering program at AGH University of Science and Technology is a comprehensive and interdisciplinary program that prepares students for careers in metrology, measurement engineering, and related fields. With its strong focus on research, quality management, and practical applications, this program provides students with a unique opportunity to acquire specialized knowledge and skills in a rapidly evolving field.
