Program Overview


Introduction to the North Atlantic Comprehensive Study Program

The Chongben College has designed the North Atlantic Program to broaden the global perspectives of elite marine science students and enhance their cross-cultural communication skills and comprehensive practical abilities. Ten selected students will embark on an integrated study tour to the United Kingdom.


Program Details

The program will be led by college administrators Chi Xin and Meng Jingjing and will take place from February 14 to 23, 2025.


Field Internship: Exploring the Mysteries of Nature

During the study period, the project team conducted field internships at:


  • Seven Sister Cliff, where students personally experienced the magnificent coastline of the Cretaceous Cliff and gained a deep understanding of its formation process and geological changes.
  • Stonehenge, where students experienced the incredible craftsmanship of nature and remained steadfast in their pursuit of mysteries.
  • West Runton Beach, where students conducted detailed research on the ecological environment of the beach under the guidance of their overseas mentor Thomas Mock, observing the living habits of intertidal organisms and analyzing the characteristics of marine ecosystems.

Visiting for Academic Exchange: Experiencing the Charm of Academia

The project team visited several internationally renowned universities and research institutes, including:


  • The University of Oxford, where students strolled through the ancient campus, visiting renowned colleges such as King's College and Trinity College, and experiencing their profound academic heritage.
  • The University of Cambridge, where students visited colleges such as King's College and Trinity College, and experienced their centuries-old historical and cultural heritage.
  • University College London, where students listened to Professor Ted Johnson's lecture on the Mathematics of Nonlinear Waves in the Ocean and visited the Bartlett School of Architecture and the Fluid Mechanics Laboratory.
  • The University of East Anglia, a strategic partner of the university, where students listened to Professor Marie Fanny Racault's lecture on Roles of viruses in the ocean and visited the Air Sea Ice Chamber laboratory.

Museum Tourism: Tracing History and Culture

The project team visited:


  • The British Museum, where students appreciated precious artifacts from around the world and gained a deeper understanding of the development of human civilization.
  • The British Museum of Natural History, where students delved into the museum's internal laboratory, observed a rich collection of marine specimens, and learned about the stories behind them.
  • The National Gallery, where students appreciated the artistic styles of different periods and the creative charm of artists.
  • The Maritime Museum, which showcases the maritime history and maritime culture of the UK, allowing students to experience the significant impact of the ocean on human development.

Cross-cultural Experience: Integrating into Local Life

During the study period, students deeply experienced the unique British cultural environment, including:


  • Tasting English breakfast and learning about English dining culture.
  • Visiting iconic buildings such as Buckingham Palace, Elizabeth Tower, and The Shard, and experiencing the unique charm of blending history and modernity.
  • Communicating and interacting with local residents, enabling students to gain a deeper understanding of British social life and customs, and enhancing their cross-cultural communication skills.
