Program Overview


Introduction to the Food Science and Engineering Program

The Food Science and Engineering program at Ocean University of China cultivates high-level innovative talents with inter-disciplinary thought and international vision. This program aims to meet the demands of the food industry and social development in the 21st century, and participate in international affairs and competitiveness.


Program Objectives

Students engaged in this major are competent for scientific research, technological development, quality control, production and operation, educational consultation, and management in the field of food, especially marine food. The program objectives include:


  • Demonstrating effective communication between people and teams, lifelong learning concept, and adaptability to facilitate participation in international affairs and competitions.
  • Flexibly employing major fundamental and professional knowledge to design reasonable technical solutions and solve practical problems in the field of food nutrition and health.
  • Showing excellent humanistic science literacy, sense of social responsibility, correct world outlook, values, view of life, and good professional code of food practitioners.
  • Applying modern tools of natural science, humanities, and food science and engineering to analyze, research, and evaluate complex engineering problems in food technology and production practice.
  • Integrating new concepts, tools, and technologies in social development into the practice of nutrition and health to become a socialist contributor with critical thinking, innovative consciousness, and lifelong learning ability.

Educational System

The educational system for this program is full-time, with a duration of four years, and is located at the Laoshan campus of Ocean University of China. The first-class discipline is Food Science and Engineering, and the degree awarded is a Bachelor of Engineering.


Graduates' Ability Requirements

Students will develop morally, intellectually, physically, aesthetically, and laboriously in an all-round way through the cultivation of the school. When they graduate, they can acquire such knowledge and abilities as follows:


  1. Instrumental knowledge: good English communication skills and international vision, proficient in computer and other modern tools, intercultural communication competence, and good team cooperation ability.
  2. Basic knowledge: master solid mathematical, natural science, and professional knowledge of food science, and apply it to the analysis and suggestions in the field of human nutrition and health.
  3. Ability to design and develop solutions: carry out investigation and research on nutrition and health problems in the international food field, design food processing systems and unit equipment or technological processes to meet specific nutritional needs.
  4. Ability to research questions: research complex engineering problems in the process of food nutrition product design and manufacturing based on scientific principles and methods.
  5. Ability to use modern tools: solve technical and complex engineering problems in the field of food science and engineering with international modern tools.
  6. Professional ethics and norms: understand and know the good professional ethics and norms of international food practitioners, and perform their duties in food engineering and practice.
  7. Environment and sustainable development: critically recognize the relationship between food practice and social multi-culture, environment, and sustainable development.
  8. Engineering and society: conduct reasonable analysis based on engineering-related background knowledge, evaluate the impact of food professional engineering practice and complex problem solutions on society, health, safety, law, and culture.
  9. Individual and team: play the role of individual, member, and leader in team activities involving food and related disciplines.
  10. Communication skills: effectively communicate with industry peers and the public on food nutrition and health issues, form the international vision to communicate and exchange in the global environment with intercultural background.

Tuition Fees

The tuition fees for Ocean University of China are RMB 60,000/year, and for the University of Adelaide, they are $45,500/year. For students who choose the "2 + 2" or "3 + 2" pathway, they will pay tuition fees according to the standard of the University of Adelaide during their study abroad.


Study Pathways

Undergraduates can take the "4 + 0", "2 + 2", and "3 + 2" pathways to complete their studies.


  • "4 + 0" pathway: students will study in OUC for four years and obtain the diploma of undergraduate and degree of bachelor of OUC.
  • "2 + 2" pathway: students will study in OUC for two years and UoA for two years and obtain the diploma of undergraduate and degree of bachelor of OUC and the honor degree of science bachelor of UoA.
  • "3 + 2" pathway: students will study in OUC for three years and UoA for two years and obtain the diploma of undergraduate of OUC and degree of master of UoA.
