Program Overview


Introduction to Musicology Program

The Musicology program encompasses a broad scope of research, collecting and evaluating data using scientific methods. This field not only explores musical experiences and values but also expands them within society by utilizing various scientific disciplines. Musicology comprises several subfields, including historical musicology, systematic musicology, folklore, ethnomusicology, and popular music. Its interdisciplinary nature has established its identity, with close relationships to other sciences such as sociology, anthropology, politics, philosophy, physics, and mathematics. The primary aim of this program is to impart meaning to music within societal contexts.


Graduates' Areas of Study

Graduates of the Musicology graduate program can pursue careers in research, academia, education, music writing, music criticism, program production, and consulting. The diverse and wide scope of study areas attract students from various backgrounds, including musicology, ethnomusicology, music performance, and social sciences.


Target Audience

The target audience for the Musicology program includes students who have graduated from musicology and ethnomusicology undergraduate programs, as well as those with backgrounds in music performance or social sciences. Additionally, the academic field of many disciplines, such as sociology, anthropology, political science, linguistics, psychology, philosophy, physics, and mathematics, is also within the target group of the musicology program.


Program Application Requirements

  • ITU Graduate Education Regulation Senate Principles Application Requirements and criteria determined by the Institute of Social Sciences are applicable.
  • Foreign language certificate
  • A minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.75
  • A letter of intent with at least 500 words, including a thesis proposal
  • 2 reference letters (to be brought to the interview)
    • CV and the work of the candidate (to be brought into the interview)
