Program Overview
Access Volunteer Programme
The Access Volunteer Programme is designed to provide role models for young people, inspiring them to pursue higher education. The programme is comprised of two strands: Pre-entry Volunteering and Post-entry Volunteering.
Pre-entry Volunteering
Pre-entry volunteering involves working with community groups, primary and secondary schools to motivate and encourage pupils to realise their full potential. Access Volunteers can choose to work with the following programmes:
- Academy for Children: Engaging primary school students
- Destination College: Secondary school and Community outreach
- Look to the Future: Supporting first-year secondary school pupils
- Shadowing Programme: Giving secondary school students a day-in-the-life experience at UL
- Orientation Days: Hosting secondary school students for campus tours and activities
Post-entry Volunteering
Post-entry volunteering involves mentoring incoming Access students, providing guidance and direction to help them settle into university life. Mentors meet with their mentees three times in the autumn semester and once in the spring semester.
Training
Access Volunteers receive full training before participating in any initiatives. This training is beneficial not only for their volunteering experience but also as a valuable addition to their CV.
Becoming an Access Volunteer
To become an Access Volunteer, students must be part of the Access Programme at UL through the Higher Education Access Route (HEAR) or the Access to University Course. Students can combine their hours across each programme to apply for a President's Volunteer Award.
