Program Overview

Cooperative Education Programme

The Cooperative Education Programme is a formal and academically accredited element of the degree programme at the University of Limerick. The programme is designed to provide students with practical work experience in their chosen field, allowing them to apply theoretical knowledge in a real-world setting.

Programme Overview

The Cooperative Education Programme is an eight-month placement, unless there are extenuating and exceptional circumstances. The programme is evaluated on a pass-fail basis, with the grade decided by an Academic member based on the employer's evaluation of the student's performance and the student's Cooperative Education Report.

Placement Process

The Cooperative Education and Careers Division (CECD) operates a well-defined Self-Sourced placement process, whereby students have the option to submit a Pre-Approval application to secure a Self-Sourced Placement using their own independent employer network and resources. Students seeking to source their own placement must adhere to the application and submission deadlines as specified by CECD.

Evaluation and Assessment

The Cooperative Education placement is evaluated by an Academic member, who will contact the student to arrange an evaluation visit. The purpose of the visit is to review the student's progress with the employer and to get the student's feedback on their placement to date. The final assessment of the placement is completed by the employer towards the end of the placement, and the student's Cooperative Education Report is also taken into account.

Programme Requirements

  • Students must complete their eight-month placement unless there are extenuating and exceptional circumstances.
  • Students must accept the first job offer they receive.
  • Students must pay tax on their earnings, unless exempt.
