Bachelor of Science in Sport and Exercise Sciences

Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Sport and Exercise Sciences is a four-year programme that provides students with an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the key elements of sport, exercise, health, and physical activity from the perspective of the sciences.


Programme Structure

The programme includes an eight-month period of work experience (Cooperative Education) in relevant work placements during the third year. The first year of the course provides a transition and immersion into the Sport and Exercise Sciences, with broad modules under the themes of "What makes an Olympic Champion?", "Why is exercise good for health?", and "What are the determinants of human performance?".


Course Content

  • Year 1: Coaching Science & Performance, Functional Anatomy, Human Physiological Systems, Sport & Exercise Sciences: Transition, Science Maths, Physics for General Science, and Introduction to Information Technology.
  • Year 2: Coaching Science & Performance, Quantitative Biomechanical Analysis, Physiology Muscle in Movement, Science Maths, and elective subjects such as Law or Computer Science.
  • Year 3: Quantitative Biomechanical Analysis, Nutrition, Exercise Metabolism & Sports Performance, Perception & Cognition in Action, and Cooperative Education.
  • Year 4: SES Project, Applied Sports Biomechanics, Sport and Health Performance Evaluation, Exercise is Medicine, and Advanced Practices in Strength and Conditioning.

Entry Requirements

  • CAO Points History: 498
  • Minimum Grades: Two H5 (Higher level) grades and Four O6 (Ordinary level) grades or four H7 (Higher Level) grades, including Mathematics, Irish or another language, and English.
  • Subject Requirements: O3/H7 grade in Applied Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Physics with Chemistry, Physical Education, Agricultural Science, Biology, and Physical Education.
  • Additional Considerations: Like science, along with sport, exercise, and physical activity.

Fees and Funding

  • EU Students with Free Fees Status: Tuition Fees (4,762), Student Contribution (2,500), and Student Levy (104).
  • Non-EU Students: Tuition Fees (22,596) and Student Levy (104).
  • Scholarships: Various scholarships available, including the Johnson and Johnson WiSTEM2D Programme, All Ireland Scholarships, and UL Sports Scholarships.
