Program Overview


Environmental Science - Higher Diploma

Brief Description

The Higher Diploma in Environmental Science at the University of Limerick allows graduates of other science and engineering degrees to develop graduate-level knowledge and skills in this growth area. They will benefit from a programme that is distinctive in its relevance to industry and business, through a focus on environmental technology, environmental management, and health & safety in the workplace.


Overview

Maintaining both the quality of life and a clean and healthy environment is now a major concern of Government, employers, non-governmental organisations, and citizens. The EU now has a very comprehensive environmental policy, and as a Member State, Ireland is obliged to act in accordance with this policy.


Programme Content

  • ER4417 - Environmental Impact Assessment: EIA is a key skill for environmental scientists, genesis, development, legal framework, and design
  • ER4627 - Safety and Industry: principles of accident causation and prevention in the workplace. Hazard and process safety analysis
  • CH4055 - Environmental Catalysis: Catalytic processes, with emphasis on end-of-pipe technologies for gaseous pollutants from flues
  • ER4405 - Conservation Ecology: purpose of biodiversity conservation, and how expenditure on conservation may be justified
  • HS4208 - Safety Technology: fire safety management, emergency planning, machine safety, and electrical hazards in the workplace
  • ER4448 - Managing Safety & Health: health and safety risk management systems, methodologies aimed at managing risks in a systematic way
  • ER4606 - Clean Technology: Methods of recycling, reducing or removing gaseous or aqueous waste from industrial processes
  • ER4508 - Pollution Control (Waste Management): Waste Minimisation, Hazardous Waste Management, Waste to energy systems, Waste recycling & Re-use
  • AU4064 - Project: company-based project to improve work practices
  • CA4003 - Career Development: An optional module for those students who wish to pursue this professional development workshop. Which prepares learners with CV and career coaching, develops a LinkedIn/online presence, physical presentation, and interviews skills. (this module is subject to change)

Entry Requirements

Applicants must hold a Level 8 honours degree at a minimum second-class honours, grade 2 (NQF or other internationally recognised equivalent) in a relevant STEM discipline such as engineering, computing, mathematics, science, or technology.
Applicants from other disciplines who have relevant scientific elements in their primary degree will also be considered.
Applicants who possess an honours degree, minimum 2nd class, grade 2, or equivalent in a non-numerate discipline and have three years experiential learning in an appropriate discipline will be considered.
RPL (Recognised Prior Learning) entry will be available for those who do not meet the minimum entry requirement but who have gained substantial experience in the area.

  • Applicants who do not have English as their first language may satisfy English Language requirements:
    • If your qualifications have been obtained in a country where English is an official language this will suffice
    • If this is not available, the following additional documents must be provided:
      • English translation of your qualification(s)/transcripts AND
      • English language competency certificate
