The Professional Diploma in Applied Economics and Energy Analysis offers a unique opportunity for students to gain a comprehensive understanding of the key contemporary applied economic issues affecting our economies and societies. Through a unique combination of research-led teaching and problem-based learning, this innovative programme supports students in developing key economic analytical skills, and to apply these skills to analyse real-world problems. Delivered fully online, the programme is designed to benefit professionals who want to upskill in economics but do not have an extensive background in the subject. The programme is also suitable for graduates in business and economics-related fields who want to refresh and refine their skills in applied and energy economics.

Overview

The Professional Diploma in Applied Economics and Energy Analysis comprises two key inter-related pillars. The first pillar focuses on the key contemporaneous dynamics affecting our economies and societies. Through the lens of applied economics, students will develop key skills for analysing issues such as enterprise/innovation policy, the economics of climate change, education, health, tourism, as well as how public policy plays a key role in shaping these issues. The second pillar pertains to the analysis of energy markets from the supply and demand sides. With a strong focus on the role of public policy in shaping energy markets, this pillar will support students to develop a deep understanding of the inter-relation between economic systems, energy markets, and policy. Both of these key pillars are delivered by following a research-led approach, enabling students to develop key critical and analytical skills for assessing and discussing key debates and associated evidence, guiding existing policy responses in the key topics covered. The programme also allows students to gain important practical skills, regarding the application of conceptual and empirical tools used in applied economics and energy economics research.

Programme Content

The programme comprises 4 modules to be completed over 1 academic year. These modules cover core areas of applied economics and energy analysis, as well as research-led teaching in the specialist areas of our faculty members.

• Autumn Semester:
  • EC5001: Induction Academy (3 ECTS)
  • EC6141: Energy Economics and Policy (9 ECTS)
• Spring Semester:
  • EC5002: Applied Issues in Economics and Policy (9 ECTS)
  • EC5006: Contemporary Issues in Economics and Policy (9 ECTS)

Entry Requirements

Applicants should hold a bachelor's degree (NFQ Level 8) with at least a second-class honours, grade 2 (2:2) in any discipline. Applicants who do not meet the standard entry requirement may be considered under Recognised Prior Learning (RPL), the process might include an interview. Where candidates are non-native English language speakers, certified demonstrable achievement in English Language Competency Test will be required.

Fees

EU €2750 Once registered, students can apply to pay their fees in instalments.
