Program Overview
Introduction to Student Leadership for Sustainable Development
The University of Limerick offers a unique program called Student Leadership for Sustainable Development (SLSD), designed to engage both international and domestic students in discussions about global issues, specifically sustainability. This seven-week extracurricular initiative aims to empower students to become global leaders in sustainable development.
About SLSD
SLSD is an immersive and enriching experience that provides students with a holistic understanding of economic, environmental, and social sustainable development. The program goes beyond theory, allowing students to develop solutions for real-world challenges. It offers various engaging streams, including workshops, speakers, ideation, and discourse, as well as project development and immersive learning experiences.
Program Structure
The program consists of weekly workshops, each focusing on a specific aspect of sustainability. The provisional schedule includes:
- Workshop A: Programme introduction and Sustainability 101
- Workshop B: UL Sustainability Mission Lab Explained and Mission Lab Project begin
- Workshop C: UL Sustainability Mission Lab Projects Continued
- Workshop D: Collaboration Model and Sustainability Practices
- Workshop E: Dilemma Cafe, discussing challenges within sustainability
- Workshop F: UL Sustainability Mission Lab Project Time and Presentation Prep
- Workshop G: Panel and peer presentations, culminating in a celebration of the students' work
Skills and Outcomes
Participating in SLSD equips students with invaluable skills, including:

Recognition and Benefits
By completing the program, students can earn up to 14 hours of volunteer time, which can contribute to the President's Volunteer Award. The program also provides a unique opportunity for students to develop a comprehensive proposal for a sustainability project, hone their public speaking and presentation skills, and create a reflective portfolio documenting their personal growth and insights throughout the program.
Accomplishments
The SLSD program has achieved significant success, with students presenting their proposals based on group-selected UL Sustainability Missions. These proposals cover a range of topics, including Digital Campus Commons, Citizens Mission Council, Revitalise River Shannon, and Agrihood Campus Commons. The program demonstrates the University of Limerick's commitment to sustainability and its efforts to nurture leaders who can drive positive change in the world.
