Brief Description

The Professional Doctorate (Engineering) - Qualifier Module is a 12-week micro-credential designed to support individuals preparing to apply for the Professional Doctorate in Engineering (DEng) at the University of Limerick. This module introduces key doctoral-level concepts, including research philosophy, knowledge creation, and the student's role in advancing professional practice.


Programme Content

During this module, students will:


  • Develop confidence in designing research that addresses real-world professional challenges.
  • Build critical academic skills, including writing, reflection, and portfolio development, for doctoral-level study.
  • Explore how professional and academic knowledge intersect in professional practice and research.
  • Prepare a formal research proposal, supported by access to expert-led workshops and personalised feedback.

Entry Requirements

To be successful on this course, applicants should:


  • Hold a bachelor's degree (NFQ Level 8) with at least a second-class honours, grade 2 (2:21) in a relevant discipline and five years' experience.
  • Consider candidates under recognised prior learning (RPL).
