MIC Ability Pathways (MAP) Project- Mapping Inclusive Futures

The MIC Ability Pathways (MAP) Project aims to provide a pathway to meaningful community engagement for people with intellectual disability, in an inclusive third-level environment which has an established history of educational excellence and community inclusion.

Funding Partners

This project is funded by the HEA under the Path 4 Phase 2 access initiative. The MAP project will replace the CGLPD programme and operates in conjunction with the Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board as accreditation partners.

Programme Content

The MIC Ability Pathways (MAP) Project is designed to support the academic, social, and personal development of programme participants. There is a particular emphasis placed on supporting learners to develop transferrable skills in the following areas:

• Information Communication Technology
• Communication
• Teamworking
• Citizenry
• Personal Effectiveness

The MAP project will provide an Educational Foundation in years 1 and 2 and a Transitioning Programme in year 3, which will enable learners to become active members of their communities and fulfil their personal life goals by transiting to further education and training and/or employment, subsequent to the educational foundation of the project.

The educational foundation will be provided through the Certificate in General Learning and Personal Development (CGLPD), which is a two-year fully accredited level 4 QQI award on the NFQ. This CGLPD encompasses 8 distinct modules, which have been designed to support the holistic development of learners with ID and is underpinned throughout by the UDL framework.

Entry Requirements

Prospective entrants must:

• Be 18 years of age on enrolment
• Have been identified as having an intellectual disability from birth or early years
• Have a commitment to ongoing learning and personal development
• Have three or more Level 3 QQI Minor Awards (including Literacy and/or Communication components), or equivalent
• Have not previously participated on or completed the CGLPD programme at MIC

The programme is set to commence in 2024, offering a unique opportunity for individuals with intellectual disabilities to engage in higher education and develop skills that will enhance their employability and personal growth.
