Introduction to the Multilingual Bachelor in Linguistics and Literary Studies

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) is launching a unique, English-taught bachelor's program in Linguistics and Literary Studies, known as the Multilingual Bachelor in Linguistics and Literary Studies (MUBA). This program is the first of its kind in Europe, offering a multilingual and multicultural approach to the study of languages and literature.

Program Structure

The MUBA program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of languages and literature, with a focus on multilingualism, multiculturalism, and urban studies. The program consists of:

• General courses taught in English
• Two main languages chosen from a selection of six languages (Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, or Spanish), with all courses taught in these languages
• The option to add a minor in one or two additional languages, including Chinese, from the third year onwards
• An international experience of one semester, either on-site or through a blended learning program on the VUB campus

Research Strengths

• Intermediality and urbanity in literary studies
• Multilingualism, language variation, and the relationship between language and cognition in linguistics These specializations are not only explored in the general courses but also in the specific courses for the six main languages offered.

Urban and Multilingual Approach

The program is designed to take advantage of Brussels' unique position as a multilingual and multicultural city. Companies repeatedly emphasize the need for employees not only with language skills but also with a good understanding of the multilingual and multicultural world at the beginning of the 21st century."

International Experience

The program includes an international experience, which can be undertaken either through an Erasmus exchange program in the third year or by studying additional languages in Brussels. Students can choose to study up to two extra languages in their final year, and a special module in Dutch as a second language is available for non-Dutch speaking students.

EUTOPIA Alliance

The VUB is part of the EUTOPIA alliance, a network of 10 like-minded universities that aim to create a new academic model for a united Europe. This alliance provides students with the opportunity to take courses from partner universities, either on-site or through blended learning, allowing for a truly international and multilingual educational experience.
