Program Overview
The University of New Brunswick offers a four-year program in Radiography, leading to a Bachelor of Health Sciences degree. This program is available on the Saint John campus and is offered in collaboration with the Saint John Regional Hospital and The Moncton Hospital.
Program Description
Radiological technologists are experts in the use of electromagnetic radiation, such as X-rays, for the diagnosis of injury and disease. They use a variety of technologies, including:
- Radiography, the commonly used X-ray for the chest, bones, joints, spine, and gastrointestinal system
- Mammography, for early detection of breast cancer
- Bone Mineral Densitometry for detection and follow-up of osteoporosis
- Angiography, to examine the heart and vascular (veins and arteries) system
- Fluoroscopy, real-time, moving images of internal structures
- Computed Tomography (CT) scanning used to obtain cross-sectional virtual slices through anatomical structures and to create 3-dimensional reconstructions
Career Opportunities
As a registered radiological technologist, graduates will:
- Assess a patient's condition and obtain clinical history
- Determine technical parameters for production of images
- Conduct examinations within a hospital's diagnostic imaging department, operating room, trauma room, and critical care units
- Analyze images
- Collaborate with the medical team, including radiologists
