Program Overview
Biology Program
The Biology program is offered by the Faculty of Science at the University of New Brunswick's Fredericton campus.
About the Program
The program introduces students to various facets of biology through a combination of lectures, laboratory instruction, and fieldwork.
Undergraduate Programs
The undergraduate program in Biology includes a special semester known as the Marine Block, which is designed for students in their 3rd or 4th year.
Marine Block
The Marine Block is a research experience semester that focuses on marine biology. It includes a blend of lectures, laboratory work, and field instruction, with trips to ecologically diverse sites in the Bay of Fundy, including the Huntsman Marine Science Centre in St. Andrews.
Courses
The Marine Block program includes the following courses:
- BIOL 4211 Marine Research Experience 2ch (4L)
- BIOL 4221 Diversity, Evolution and Ecology of Marine Plants 5Ch (C/L/S)
- BIOL 4641 Coastal Marine Ecology 5Ch (C/L/S)
- BIOL 4691 Biology of Marine Parasites 5ch (C/L/S)
- BIOL 4991 Aquaculture in Canada 5Ch (C/L/S)
These courses cover biological diversity in the marine environment, ecological methods in intertidal habitats, and methods in physiological and molecular research pertinent to studying marine organisms.
Admission and Enrollment
To apply for the Marine Block program, students register for the listed courses through their eServices portal and are temporarily placed on a waiting list while their prerequisites are checked. Upon admission, a deposit of $100 is required to secure a position in the semester. Enrollment is limited to 18 students.
Cost and Fees
The cost of the program includes regular tuition plus $750, which covers all field trip costs excluding food, except for trips to the Huntsman Marine Science Centre, where food is included.
Research Areas
The program encompasses various research areas, including marine biology, ecological methods, physiological and molecular research, and aquaculture, providing students with a broad range of skills and knowledge necessary for further studies at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
