Advanced Geographic Information Systems

Course Overview

This course is designed to follow an introductory course in Geographic Information Systems (such as GGE 3423: Introduction to GIS) by offering students a deeper understanding of geographic data handling. It is designed for students with previous experience in geographic data handling using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other mapping tools but limited skills in computer programming and data management.


Target Audience

The potential students include senior undergraduate and graduate students as well as professionals with expertise in Geomatics, Geography, Forestry, Earth Sciences, Geology, Education, Archaeology, History, etc. and interest in managing and analyzing geographic data.

What You Will Learn

This course is designed to help you:


  • Apply the conceptual, logical, and physical models to represent geospatial information.
  • Design geospatial databases using the object-relational model.
  • Implement spatial operations in geospatial databases with SQL.
  • Understand the theories underlying the most common data structures for vector and raster data.
  • Apply geospatial analytics for applications involving network and spatiotemporal data.
  • Acquire technical training in commercial and open-source GIS and DBMS software packages.

Course Structure

  • Students have six months from the registration date to complete the course.
  • All course exams and/or assignments must be completed by the designated end date.

CBEPS Candidates

Successful completion of the two online courses GGE 3423 - Introduction to GIS, and GGE 4423 - Advanced GIS, offer exemption for the examination of two syllabus items C5 - Geographic Information Systems, and E1 - Spatial Databases and Land Information Systems to The Canadian Board of Examiners for Professional Surveyors (CBEPS) candidates.


Fees and Payments

There is a $150 non-refundable
on-transferable online fee per course in addition to applicable tuition and fees. This fee is non-refundable once the add/drop date has passed within the term the course is registered in.
