The Hand Sewing Basics program is designed to teach participants the fundamentals of hand sewing. This program will cover everyday sewing skills and prepare students for more advanced techniques. The course will focus on hand sewing, making it accessible to those who do not own a sewing machine.
Program Details
The program will cover various topics, including:
- Repairing clothes
- Sewing on buttons
- Making minor alterations, such as hemming
Materials Required
Participants will need to bring the following materials:
- Something to carry their sewing kit in
- Sewing kit:
- Sewing needles
- Fabric scissors
- Snips (small scissors for snipping thread)
- Thimble (optional but recommended)
- Cotton fabric (any kind)
- Thread
- Straight pins or clips
- Pencil
- Sewing ruler (long, wide, see-through)
- Tailor's chalk/wax
- Seam ripper
Course Schedule
The course will be held on Tuesdays from February 3 to February 17, from 6-8 p.m. at the UNB Fredericton campus, Memorial Hall, room 26.
Tuition Fee
The tuition fee for the program is $89, plus HST.
Instructor Biography
The instructor, Dana-Lynn Farrell, has been sewing since childhood and has worked as a seamstress full-time. She has experience in creating costumes, repairs, and alterations, and continues to enjoy sewing as a hobby.
Course Outline
The course will cover the following topics:
Week 1
- Preparation: Cutting fabric, threading a needle
- Stitching: Straight stitch, back stitch, carpet stitch
Week 2
- Buttons: Attach button, make button hole
- Mending: Stitch up small hole, patch a hole
- Assemble a portable sewing kit
Week 3
- Alterations: Hemming
- Project: Bring in an item to mend/alter or practice techniques
