Program Overview
Environmental Geosciences Program
The Environmental Geosciences program provides earth-science students with a background to pursue careers or graduate studies in environmentally related geoscience fields, especially in areas related to water resources, water contamination and remediation, oceanography, and climate change.
Program Description
Many earth scientists are interdepartmental, and the program encompasses various fields, including:
- Geochemists: dealing with the chemical make-up of surface and ground waters, magmas, and rocks in the earth's crust, as well as using geochemical techniques in the discovery of new mineral and energy reserves and addressing environmental concerns.
- Biogeochemists: investigating the cycling through the global environment of chemical elements, from essential "nutrients" to toxic metals.
- Geobiologists: concerned with the paleontology, biogeography, and morpho-behavioural functional evolution of fossils, paleoecological aspects of ancient life forms, and establishing a relative time frame for past geological and climatic events.
- Geophysicists: measuring and studying the gravity, magnetic, and electrical fields of the earth, recording and analyzing seismic waves, and imaging subsurface water and hydrocarbon reservoirs.
Faculty of Science
The Faculty of Science is one of the university's oldest faculties, established in 1785. The Bachelor of Science option in Environmental Geosciences is offered by the Department of Earth Sciences.
Professional Registration
Geoscience is a regulated profession in most of Canada, and the professional stream programs offered by this department meet the guidelines developed by Geoscientists Canada for academic training.
Admission Requirements
For admission requirements, please refer to the general admission requirements for the Faculty of Science.
