Program Overview

Introduction to the Graduate Program of Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering (GGE)

The Graduate Program of Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering (GGE) at the University of New Brunswick (UNB) has a long and proud history of excellence in research and education at the graduate level. The department has consistently received top ranking in research within the university and is well known internationally in the various fields of Geomatics.

Program Overview

The GGE department has been offering graduate programs since 1963, with over 500 students from around the world obtaining postgraduate degrees. The program averages approximately 55 graduate students per year, representing a range of 15 to 20 different countries. The international experience in the graduate program is a major strength, with students, faculty research, and graduate employment all benefiting from this diversity.

Research Areas

The GGE department excels in various fields of Geomatics, including:

  • GPS and geodesy
  • GIS
  • Remote sensing
  • Engineering surveys
  • Ocean mapping
  • Land administration The department also incorporates interdisciplinary approaches, relating these fields to other disciplines such as:
    • Geology
    • Physics
    • Civil engineering
    • Oceanography
    • Law

Degree Options

The GGE department offers a variety of degrees and postgraduate diplomas, including a course-based Master's program that can be completed within one to two years.

Admission and Funding

There is no specific deadline for applications, although international students must allow plenty of time (e.g., often 3-6 months) to obtain student visas. Opportunities for funding through research and/or teaching are available, but are highly competitive. As a result, the department has created a course-based Master's program to provide an alternative for students who may not receive funding.
