Program Overview
Program Overview
The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Course is designed for Registered Nurses (RNs) and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) preparing to practice in the SANE role. The curriculum follows the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) SANE Education Guidelines and awards 40 nursing contact hours upon successful completion.

- RNs and APRNs seeking SANE didactic education
- Clinicians working in emergency, urgent care, or forensic settings
Accreditation & Hours
Total Hours: 40 contact hours (IAFN guideline-aligned)
Course Structure
- Prework (Online): 16 hours of asynchronous modules
- In-Person Training: 24 hours of live lectures over three consecutive 8-hour days at KU Medical Center

Clinical Skills Simulation Training
A separate 16-hour clinical simulation training utilizing the IAFN curriculum to support competency in performing the adult sexual assault medical forensic examination is offered.

Continuing Education
In support of improving patient care, the University of Kansas Medical Center is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
Nursing: ANCC Contact Hours
The University of Kansas Medical Center designates this activity for a maximum of 16 ANCC contact hours. Nurses should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
