Preliminary Year in Internal Medicine
Program Overview
Department of Internal Medicine
The Department of Internal Medicine offers a comprehensive program for residents, including a preliminary year in internal medicine. The program is designed to provide optimal clinical exposures to ensure readiness for the PGY2 year destination positions.
Preliminary Year in Internal Medicine
The preliminary year in internal medicine is a one-year program that mirrors the categorical residents' schedules with few exceptions. Instead of continuity clinic during the +1 week, preliminary year residents spend time in their destination program, up to the limit defined by their respective ACGME Residency Review Committee.
- The program matches 10 residents per year in preliminary medicine positions.
- Additionally, 14 residents per year are trained in PGY1 clinical-based year positions for the Departments of Anesthesia and Neurology.
- Preliminary year residents are an integral part of the team during their intern year and for years to come, as they co-manage patients together at the University of Kansas Hospital.
Admission Criteria
The program does not interview candidates for preliminary year positions. Instead, applicants are ranked based on a structured ERAS file review, as well as feedback from destination programs when available.
Program Description
The program provides residents with significant time in their destination department, allowing them to integrate new clinical knowledge with hands-on skills. This opportunity ensures that residents are ready to start their PGY2 position in their destination field.
