Program Overview

Department of Internal Medicine

The Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Kansas Health System offers a comprehensive residency program.

Program Overview

The program provides 23 categorical positions and 22 preliminary year positions each year. To fill the preliminary year positions, the program works closely with advanced programs in dermatology, ophthalmology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, radiation-oncology, radiology, and interventional radiology.

Program Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the program, applicants must be a current senior or graduate from a medical school in the United States or Canada, accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or graduation from a college of osteopathic medicine in the United States, accredited by the American Osteopathic Association Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (AOACOCA). Alternatively, applicants may have graduated from a medical school outside of the United States or Canada and meet one of the following additional qualifications:

  • Holding a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) prior to appointment
  • Holding a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the United States licensing jurisdiction in which the ACGME-accredited program is located

International medical graduates are sponsored primarily on J-1 visas.

Application Process

The program receives applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Applicants must complete the MyERAS application and submit all supporting documentation by November 30th. The application must include:

  • MyERAS application
  • Personal Statement
  • Medical School Transcripts
  • Letters of Recommendation (at least 3)
  • Medical School Performance Evaluation (MSPE or "Dean's Letter")
  • USMLE transcripts and/or COMLEX-USA transcripts

An Internal Medicine Chair or Departmental letter is optional.

Recruitment Process

The program participates in program signaling and utilizes signals as one of many data points in deciding whom to invite to interview. All appointments are made through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Candidates must register through the NRMP website. Personal interviews are by invitation only and are based on the applicant's academic performance, United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) scores and/or COMLEX-USA scores, letters of recommendation, and other accomplishments as detailed in the ERAS application.

Interview Process

The program interviews approximately 220 applicants for the 23 categorical positions. Interviews are offered in a virtual environment, and all invitations for interviews are typically offered by December 1st.

Matched Student Characteristics

The program aims to recruit resident physicians with a strong aptitude, engaging personality, effective communication skills, focused work ethic, and growth-oriented mindset. The program recognizes that its team is strengthened by its inclusive excellence.
