Program Overview


Tourism studies

Tourism studies is a young and exciting research field in this country. In the program, students acquire independent and specialized work methods that open the way for tourism researchers to a wide range of jobs, such as research work and management positions at companies and public institutions.


MS – 120 credits

The Master's program in Tourism Studies is a two-year theoretical and practical graduate program at the Faculty of Life and Environmental Sciences. Quality and recognized international studies with great flexibility and an interdisciplinary approach.

Study requirements

  • 120e must be completed for the MS degree.
  • The master project is 60 units but can be 30e or 90e in exceptional cases.
  • Other units are compulsory courses and optional courses that support the master's project.

Admission requirements

  • First university degree, BS or BA degree, with a minimum grade of 7.25.
  • Applicants must submit a short statement (1 page) in which they state why they are interested in this program, the goals of the program and a possible topic for a master's thesis.
  • All applications must be accompanied by recommendations from 2 persons (teacher/supervisor) who know the applicant well and can give him a clear opinion.

Course

Research in geography and tourism 1

The course is a dialogue platform for master's students in geography and tourism about the program as a whole, the subject of research in geography and tourism and the methods used. Students present ideas and proposals for their own final project and review each other's work.


Theories in tourism

In the 1970s, scholars began to reflect on the purpose, development and importance of tourism in the world. Questions like "who is a tourist?", "what is the purpose of traveling?" and "what defines travel?" were common in the past and to this day scholars ponder these same questions, albeit with changing emphases in ever-changing social and political conditions.


Sustainable development of tourism in northern regions

The course Sustainable development of tourism in northern regions is taken by distance learning from the University of OULU - Finland. The course is part of a collaboration with the thematic network of the University of Northern Norway: Thematic Network on Northern Tourism.


Arctic tourism: Practice and experience

The course will be taught from the beginning of March - May. The course focuses on tourism in the Arctic with an emphasis on the tourist experience and the relationship between tourism and the communities and landscapes of the Arctic.

The course is a dialogue platform for master's students in geography and tourism about the program as a whole, the subject of research in geography and tourism and the methods used. Students present ideas and proposals for their own final project and review each other's work.


Final project

  • The subject of the final project must be chosen in consultation with the supervisor(s) from among the faculty's permanent teachers. The final project is 60 credits.
  • The choice of subject is primarily the student's responsibility, but in consultation with the instructor.
  • The exam of the final project is divided into two parts: an oral exam and a public lecture.
