Fashion (MA) Program Overview
The Master of Arts in Fashion program is a unique graduate degree in Canada that examines the broader social, cultural, and economic implications of the production, marketing, and consumption of fashion. Students work closely with faculty and experts in an academically rigorous environment to develop advanced research skills by completing a written or creative Major Research Project (MRP).
Admissions Information
- Completion of a four-year undergraduate (or equivalent) degree from an accredited institution
- Minimum GPA or equivalent of 3.00/4.33 (B) in the last two years of study
- Statement of interest

- Transcripts
- Two letters of recommendation, at least one must be an academic reference
- Writing sample
- Portfolio (optional, if it strengthens the application)
- English language proficiency requirement
Curriculum
The program equips students with a critically informed approach to fashion studies, including familiarity with key theorists and critical debates relating to the fashion system. It does not require prior fashion industry knowledge, making it appealing to a wide variety of students. Students gain advanced research skills by completing an original written or creative major research project.
Paid Opportunities and Scholarships
Top candidates are awarded program funding. Opportunities to work as a Research Assistant or Graduate Teaching Assistant are available.
Internship
An optional internship course provides students with professional experience in fashion or cultural industries, locally or internationally.
Fashion Research Collection (FRC)
The FRC contains over 3,000 garments, accessories, and ephemera dating back to 1820, available to support on-site object-based research.
Student Profile
The program has launched students into the world of fashion, providing a platform for learning fresh perspectives and new ways of thinking, alongside a support network of diverse peers, academics, and fashion leaders.

Preparing an application requires careful research and planning. Students are encouraged to submit applications prior to the first consideration date to increase their chances of securing financial support for their graduate studies.
Funding
Funding comes from a combination of employment contracts (as a teaching assistant), scholarships, awards, and stipends. Additional funding sources, both internal and external, are available to graduate students.
