Program Overview

Introduction to Civil Engineering

As a civil engineer, you will play a crucial role in society. From designing and managing systems for flood defence and waste management, as well as bridges, airports, buildings and more, you will solve environmental and urbanization challenges, and make our communities more comfortable and safe. The career possibilities are vast, with many civil engineers going on to lead or consult on structural, environmental and transportation projects, or to pursue opportunities in the construction and mining industries.

Program Overview

In the Department of Civil Engineering, our students receive training from renowned, award-winning professors. Our undergraduates have the opportunity to join student competition teams and gain invaluable work experience through our optional Co-op & Internship. Our graduate students work on innovative research that accelerates their careers and changes lives, including waste-to-energy bioconversion and earthquake hazard mitigation.

Facilities and Resources

The Department of Civil Engineering offers 16 state-of-the-art laboratories and facilities, including the Structures Lab.

Our People

A professor and Canada Research Chair, Dr. Bilal Farooq's work in disruptive transportation technologies is powered by Big Data and big dreams to make travel eco-friendly. Discover what drives Dr. Farooq and all Department of Civil Engineering professors.

Location and Community

Step out of the classroom and into the heart of Toronto, Canada's largest city. Connect with leaders in culture, business, health care or government. Find a local partner for your venture, intern at a downtown company or join a global movement. From here, you can go anywhere.

Alumni Spotlight

"What makes Toronto Metropolitan University so special is its value in people; from the growth of its students, to the strength of its staff and faculty, and how we are all integrated with the evolution of the local community, which extends to a vast, international scale. As a graduate, the value of people is what drives me, and how I can take what I've learned and make our society a better place."
Amanda L. Ciosek, Sales/Application Engineering, EIT at H2Flow Equipment Inc.
Civil Engineering '10 (BEng), '12 (MASc), '18 (PhD)
