Program Overview

Program Overview

The Mathematics and Its Applications program at TMU explores various paths in mathematics, enabling students to discover how math can be applied to spot patterns in diseases, social media networks, and stocks. This program offers students the opportunity to conduct research and pursue an optional paid co-op to gain real-world experience.

Program Structure

  • The program begins with a common first year, where students share classes with their peers and build their knowledge with courses in math, science, computing, and liberal studies.
    • In the second year, students who have chosen an option in Computer Science or Economics will start taking the required courses in those subjects.
  • In the third and fourth years, students will grow their skills and focus on specialized subjects in math.
    • In the fourth year, students will have the option to work on a year-long undergraduate thesis research project with a professor.

Options for Specialization

  • The program offers options for students to specialize in an area within their degree:
    • Option in Computer Science: Includes required courses in computer science.
    • Option in Economics: Includes required courses in economics.
    • If neither of these options is chosen, students will be enrolled in the regular option.

Testimonial

The Mathematics and Its Applications program has been praised by alumni for its ability to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and attention to detail. For example, Gabriela Franco, a graduate of the Math and Its Applications program, noted that it helped her develop these skills, which she now uses daily as a project manager.
