PhD in Economics Program

The PhD in Economics program is designed for individuals who have achieved a high level of academic excellence in their master's studies in economics or a related field of study.


Admission Requirements

For admission into the PhD in Economics program, applicants must fulfill the following program-specific requirements:


  • Must have achieved at least a 3.33/4.33 (B+) average or equivalent in their master's studies in economics or a related field of study at a recognized university in North America or abroad.
  • Provide two academic letters of reference from former instructors at the MA or equivalent level.
  • Resume/CV.
  • Provide a statement of interest, approximately 500 words long, including:
    • Reasons for graduate study in Economics.
    • Research interest(s) to be pursued.
    • How previous studies and experience have prepared the applicant for the PhD program.
    • Career objectives and how the PhD program relates to them.

Eligibility for Applicants with Non-Economics Background

Individuals with a master's degree in a field other than economics (e.g., finance, mathematics, statistics, computer science, etc.) should apply to the PhD program only if they have taken some advanced undergraduate or graduate courses in microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics. Otherwise, such individuals are encouraged to apply to the MA in International Economics and Finance and then consider the PhD program afterwards.
