Program Overview


Admissions for Master of Social Work (MSW)

The Master of Social Work (MSW) program at Toronto Metropolitan University is designed to equip students with the knowledge and experiences needed to pursue and transform social work practice in various settings. The program is a one-year full-time program that is considered an "Advanced Standing" program, offered to eligible students who have already completed a Bachelor in Social Work program.


Admission Requirements

To be considered for admission to the MSW program, applicants must meet the minimum program requirements:


  • A Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree from an institution that meets the guidelines of the International Association of Schools of Social Work.
  • A minimum 3.0/4.33 (B or equivalent) average in the last two years of study.

Application Deadlines

Applications for Fall 2026 will open at the beginning of October. The application deadlines are as follows:


  • Online OUAC Application: Monday, November 10, 2025 (Flexible)
  • Submit all supplemental documents, complete application: Monday, December 1, 2025 (Hard)

Required Documents

The following documents are required as part of the application package:


1) Statement of Interest

A 3-4 page statement (double-spaced, one-inch margins) that addresses the following:


  • Community Concerns & Social Work's Role: Identify a social issue and explain how you will impact these concerns through policy and practice.
  • Alignment with Vision and Values: Explain how you will incorporate the School's values into your practice, advocacy, research, community engagement, and/or professional development.
  • Contribution to Learning Environment: Explain how your admittance will help foster an inclusive and transformative learning environment.

Optional Augmentation

Applicants may also share their experiences through alternative formats, such as:


  • Video submissions: Maximum 2 minutes
  • Arts-based formats: Poetry, artwork, or narrative (maximum 1 page to be added to the statement)

2) Resume Template

The resume should include the following information:


  • Name
  • Email address
  • Education (degrees and academic qualifications with dates of completion or expected completion)
  • Work experience (paid social work/social service experience, unpaid social work/social service experience, paid non-social work experience, relevant volunteer work)
  • Additional information (awards, publications, additional training received/completed, workshops or conference papers presented)

3) Two Reference Letters

Reference letters are a key component of the application package. Referees should be able to speak to the applicant's academic, research, and/or professional abilities.
