Program Overview

Midwifery Education Program

The Midwifery Education Program (MEP) is a rigorous and rewarding program that prepares students for a career in midwifery.

Program Overview

The MEP is very competitive and has a limited enrolment, with approximately 45 applicants accepted into the program at each site every year. Successful applicants usually have completed one or more years of university or have equivalent experience before applying. Grades are only one of the components reviewed for entry into this program. This program is not available to international students.

Requirements

  • An Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent with six Grade 12 U/M courses including:
    • Grade 12 U English (ENG4U preferred)
    • Biology (SBI4U)
    • Chemistry (SCH4U)
    • One Grade 12 U or M course in Canadian World Studies or the Social Sciences and the Humanities (i.e., history, sociology, anthropology, psychology, family studies, geography, law)
  • Minimum of 75% required in each of the subjects listed above and a minimum of 75% overall average (or equivalent)
  • Academic admission requirements for all other applicants are available on the admissions requirements page
  • A health professional baccalaureate degree, such as a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, from an accredited university, or equivalent
  • Applicants who have completed education at an accredited university or a public Canadian college (or equivalent) must present a minimum average of 75% or higher in their top ten (10) post-secondary courses
  • Applicants with post-secondary education who have completed less than ten (10) post-secondary courses must present an overall average of at least 75%
  • Recent and relevant maternity care experience

  2. Submit/Upload Required Documents

  • Applications and required documents must be received by February 1

Submitting Supporting Documents

  • Midwifery Supplementary Information: In addition to meeting competitive academic requirements, applicants are required to submit non-academic requirements
  • The Racial Equity Admissions Self ID: Used to promote equitable representations of Black, Persons of Colour (BPOC), and/or racialized people in the multiple mini interviews for admission
  • The Indigenous Admissions Process: Designed to counter some of the systemic disadvantages that may affect Indigenous applicants' access to the program
  • Applicants who choose to self-identify as Indigenous, First Nations, Métis, or Inuit can indicate that they wish to participate in the IAP by completing this section of the Midwifery Supplementary Information form
  • Submission Instructions:
    1. Access the ChooseTMU Applicant Portal account
    2. Click on the button to link to the eForms Centre
    3. Click on the eForms Centre tile
    4. Then click on the Midwifery Form link

After You Apply

Application Status

  • The ChooseTMU Applicant Portal is the primary way of communicating with applicants
  • Check the portal often for updates
  • It is the applicant's responsibility to read all the letters posted to their My Communications page and to track their application status under My Application Status

Personal Interviews

  • Interviews are conducted online
  • Applicants are asked a series of interview questions, and the recorded answers are reviewed by the assessor
  • Interviews typically focus on areas such as:
    • Motivation to become a midwife
    • Qualities such as empathy, responsibility, flexibility, and self-reflexivity
    • Awareness of the reality and demands of being a midwifery student and a midwife in Ontario
    • Skills such as communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving

Post Interview Process

  • After the interview stage is completed, offers of admissions will be made to approximately 45 successful candidates in early May
  • Candidates are notified of their admission decisions through their ChooseTMU account
  • A select number of applicants who were not granted admission may be placed on a waiting list
  • All waiting lists are automatically dissolved at the beginning of the school year (end of the first week of classes)

Post-Baccalaureate Program for Health Professionals (PBHP)

  • The PBHP is typically only offered to a few suitable applicants each year
  • During the review of the application to the 4-year MEP, applicants will be identified as holding a previous health professional degree
  • If an applicant is successful regarding the basic admissions requirements of the MEP and is selected for an interview, they will be formally informed of the PBHP
  • If an applicant is interested in the PBHP, they will be required to submit detailed information about their relevant past clinical and academic experience in labour and delivery care on the same day that they attend their interview
  • Candidacy for the PBHP is conditional on both a successful overall application to the MEP and relevant educational and work experience
  • If an applicant meets these criteria, they will be invited to a PBHP interview
  • During a PBHP interview, the applicant's work history will be reviewed, as well as their readiness to transition into midwifery and their aptitude to meet the demands of an intensive, condensed program
  • Meeting criteria does not guarantee an offer of admission, since applicants can outnumber available spots
  • The PBHP is completed over 6 consecutive semesters (no summer break between year 1 and 2)
  • Applicants offered admission to the PBHP can decide whether to accept it or a place within the 4-year MEP
