Program Overview

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program is a comprehensive academic endeavor that requires the successful completion of several key components. These include the completion of four single-term graduate courses, a written and oral candidacy examination, and a research dissertation based on original research.

Program Requirements

• The program necessitates the completion of four single-term graduate courses.
  • Up to two of these courses may be taken outside of the program, provided they are approved.
• A written and oral candidacy examination must be completed within 16 months from initial registration.
• A research dissertation, founded on original research, is a core requirement of the program.
• One of the four courses may be a directed studies course (BE8003), subject to the supervisor's approval.

Course Selection and Supervision

• Course selections are typically confirmed through a Program of Study agreement between the supervisor and the student, with the approval of the program director.
• The supervisor must approve the dissertation research proposal, which must be submitted in writing.
• After consulting with the student, the supervisor recommends to the program director the appointment of a supervisory committee.

Dissertation and Defense

• The core aspect of the program is the successful defense of the doctoral dissertation, which must contain original contributions to knowledge.
• The defense is conducted at an oral examination, where the student's work is presented and defended.

Program Structure
