Program Overview
The Toronto Metropolitan University School of Medicine's Family Medicine Residency Program received accreditation from the College of Family Physicians of Canada in October 2024. This program aims to train family physicians who are patient-centered, professional, and dedicated to improving the health and well-being of individuals, families, and communities.

Curriculum
The program's curriculum is comprehensive and competency-based, covering diverse areas including equity, diversity, and inclusion in medical care, research strategies, communication skills, and patient safety. A unique feature of the program is the LEARN Time program, which offers individualized time, space, and resources for residents to focus on areas of specialized interest.
Training Sites
Residents will train in a supportive environment with access to multiple major training sites, including:

- Trillium Health Partners
- Headwaters Health Care Centre
- Halton Healthcare
- Peel Region
- ErinoakKids
- Michael Garron Hospital Residency training will leverage a distributed model, which may include training at any of these sites for learning in environments that include community and clinical settings, urban and rural environments, and inpatient and outpatient settings.
Requirements
Candidates must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada and meet both the basic criteria and the Ontario-specific criteria in order to apply to the Family Medicine program. International medical graduates (IMGs) are eligible to apply provided they meet all relevant criteria.
Application Process
Applications to the Family Medicine program are only accepted through CaRMS. All applicants will be notified through CaRMS Online, and TMU will send email invitations directly to applicants selected for an interview. Three Family Medicine Structured Reference Letters are required with the application.
Program Outcomes
Residents who complete TMU's Family Medicine program will be eligible to complete the CFPC Certification Examination in Family Medicine.
Travel Requirements
Travel to various locations will be required, and access to a personal vehicle will be beneficial. However, anyone with access to a reliable means of transportation is also encouraged to consider this program.

- 16 weeks: Family Medicine
- 8 weeks: Electives
- 4 weeks: Emergency Medicine 2
- 4 weeks: Care of the Elderly/Palliative Care
- 4 weeks: Family Medicine Extracurricular
- 8 weeks: Rural Medicine / Indigenous Care
- 8 weeks: Selectives (Outpatient Specialty Clinics and Outpatient Specialty Clinics)
