Program Overview
The Toronto Metropolitan University School of Medicine's Pediatrics Residency Program received accreditation from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in October 2024. This program empowers learners to become outstanding consultant pediatricians, leaders in the field, and pursue lifelong learning. Residents gain the necessary knowledge and skills to deliver high-quality, evidence-based care with cultural competence and empathy.

The program offers a community-based approach, preparing graduates to confidently practice pediatrics in any setting and be well-prepared to enter subspecialty pediatric training if they choose. Highlights include:

Curriculum
The comprehensive, competency-based Foundational Curriculum covers diverse areas, including equity, diversity, and inclusion in medical care, research strategies, communication skills, and patient safety. The curriculum is structured into several blocks, including:
Transition to Pediatrics
- 1 week: Orientation
- 5 weeks: Clinical Teaching Unit (CTU)
- 2 weeks: Night float
- 4 weeks: Outpatient General Pediatrics Clinic
Foundations of Pediatrics
- 10 weeks: CTU
- 4 weeks: Pediatric Emergency Department (ED)
- 4 weeks: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Level 2 (NICU II)
- 4 weeks: Community comprehensive (CTU/NICU I/II)
- 4 weeks: Longitudinal subspecialty ambulatory rotation
- 6 weeks: Night float
- 2 weeks: Endocrinology
- 2 weeks: Cardiology
- 4 weeks: Elective
Core of Pediatrics
- 4 weeks: Child Psychiatry
- 2 weeks: Scholarly Project
- 4 weeks: Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
- 2 weeks: PICU on-call night float
- 12 weeks: Longitudinal subspecialty ambulatory rotation
- 6 weeks: Developmental Pediatrics
- 12 weeks: NICU II
- 4 weeks: NICU III
- 6 weeks: Enrichment
- 4 weeks: Outpatient General Pediatrics Clinic
- 4 weeks: Pediatric ED

Requirements
Candidates must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada and meet both the basic criteria and the Ontario-specific criteria. International medical graduates are eligible to apply provided they meet all relevant criteria.
Training Sites
Residents will train at four sites with whom TMU has clinical affiliations, including:
- William Osler Health System (WOHS)
- Trillium Health Partners
- Headwaters Health Care Centre
- Halton Healthcare
How to Apply
Applications to the Pediatrics program are accepted through CaRMS. All applicants will be notified through CaRMS Online. Three reference letters are required with the application, including at least one from a physician who has observed the applicant in a clinical setting.
