Program Overview
Program Overview
The Law Practice Program (LPP) is an innovative, rigorous, and demanding eight-month program designed to help candidates succeed in their legal careers. The program is equivalent to articling and provides participants with the opportunity to develop the core skills and competencies essential for success in practice.
Eligibility
Candidates in the Law Society of Ontario (LSO) licensing process who have completed either a Juris Doctor (JD) from a recognized Canadian law school, or an equivalent degree as determined by the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) through the completion of exams and receipt of a Certificate of Qualification for internationally trained lawyers, are eligible to apply. Candidates must also be eligible to study and work in Ontario.
Program Structure
The LPP consists of two components: a four-month practical training component and a four-month work experience component.
Practical Training Component
The practical training component runs from August to December and is primarily virtual and online. Candidates work in virtual law firms of approximately four to six members, supported by practicing lawyers who offer guidance, feedback, and assessment. The training is interactive, experiential, and practical, with candidates working on files developed by practicing lawyers.
Work Experience Component
The work experience component runs from January to April, and candidates are expected to secure their own work experience placements. The LPP provides support and resources to candidates, including professional development sessions and a library of resources. Candidates must be located in the Province of Ontario during their work experience.
Evaluation and Assessment
The progress of LPP candidates is monitored throughout the program, and candidates have ample opportunity for feedback prior to assessed evaluations. Each four-month component is individually assessed on a pass/fail basis.
Fees and Financial Assistance
The fee for the LPP is included in the licensing fee to the LSO, and there are no additional tuition costs from Toronto Metropolitan University. Candidates may be eligible for financial assistance through the Law Society of Ontario (LSO) Financial Assistance program.
Accommodations and Support
Candidates with disabilities can access support through Toronto Metropolitan University's Academic Accommodation Support (AAS). The LPP also provides support and resources to candidates, including professional development sessions and a library of resources.
Work Experience Details
The work experience is expected to be paid, with a mandatory minimum compensation of $620 per week. However, employers may apply for an exemption from this requirement. The work experience is designed to provide candidates with the opportunity to further build upon and demonstrate the skills gained during the training component.
