Program Overview

Bachelor in Physics

The Bachelor in Physics program at ULB is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in physics, mathematics, and computer science. The program aims to develop students' creativity and innovative capacity, enabling them to become experts in their field.

Programme Objectives

The program objectives are to:

  • Explore the world and build new knowledge from experimental observations and reasoning
  • Develop students' expertise in mathematics and computer science
  • Foster creativity and innovative capacity
  • Prepare students for careers in pure and applied research, as well as other fields such as medicine, finance, and engineering

Teaching Team and Methods

The teaching team uses various methods, including:

  • Lectures
  • Practical exercises and laboratory work
  • Interactive seminars
  • Homework and personal work
  • Practical exercises represent about 50% of the time

International/Openness

The program offers exchange agreements with other universities in Belgium and abroad, allowing students to spend 6 months to 1 year studying at a partner university. Courses taken at partner universities are officially recognized by ULB.

Programme's Added Value

The program's added value includes:

  • Physicists are trained to solve new and complex problems
  • Students have the opportunity to develop projects during the "Printemps des Sciences" and under the supervision of a faculty researcher
  • A visit to the European laboratory of particle physics, CERN, in Geneva, is organized in the third block
  • ULB is the only complete university located in the capital of Europe, offering a valuable multicultural environment

Access Conditions

The access conditions for the Bachelor in Physics program are as follows:

  • Students must have a Certificate of Upper Secondary Education (CESS) or equivalent
  • Students must have a sufficient mastery of the French language
  • Students from outside the European Union are subject to the admission criteria of the commission

Programme

The program is divided into three blocks:

  • Block 1: Students receive basic education in mathematics, physics, and chemistry
  • Block 2: Students continue their education in mathematics, physics, and computer science
  • Block 3: Students specialize in physics and have the opportunity to take optional courses

Courses

The program includes the following courses:

  • Calcul différentiel et intégral I
  • Géométrie analytique et calcul matriciel
  • Algčbre linéaire
  • Physique générale I et II
  • Informatique
  • Anglais scientifique I
  • Calcul différentiel et intégral II
  • Mécanique analytique
  • Thermodynamique
  • Relativité, électromagnétisme et optique ondulatoire
  • Introduction ŕ la mécanique quantique
  • Laboratoires, statistique appliquée ŕ la physique expérimentale et projet

Optional Courses

Students can choose from the following optional courses:

  • Chimie générale
  • La structure de l'univers
  • Biologie générale
  • Sciences de la Terre, Environnement et Société
  • Sciences, éthique, histoire et société
  • Science et Société : analyse de controverses scientifiques
  • Anglais scientifique II
  • Electronique
  • How To Make (almost) Any Experiment Using Digital Fabrication
  • Eléments d'optique physique

What's Next?

After completing the Bachelor in Physics program, students can pursue a Master's degree in Physics or related fields. The program prepares students for careers in:

  • Pure research (physics, biophysics, geophysics, astrophysics)
  • Applied research (physics, nuclear medicine, image reconstruction, materials science, meteorology, telecommunications, energy production)
  • Research and Development (various sectors of engineering, computer science, actuaries)
  • Teaching (physics, mathematics, computer science)
  • Consultancy

Physicists with a Master's degree are in high demand due to their analytical problem-solving skills.
