Program Overview

Master of Specialization in Dermopharmacy and Cosmetology

The Master of Specialization in Dermopharmacy and Cosmetology is a one-year, 60-credit program that is co-organized by the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and the Université de Ličge. The program is designed to provide students with a multidisciplinary and high-level scientific education in the field of cosmetology.

Context

The European cosmetic industry is a world leader, and its products are highly innovative and widely used by consumers. However, the increasing complexity of regulatory constraints in the field of cosmetic products and their ingredients requires specialists with specific training. This program aims to prepare students for a career in this field by providing them with a comprehensive education in dermatopharmacy and cosmetology.

Objectives

The objective of the program is to train rigorous scientists who are capable of designing and manufacturing cosmetic products, controlling raw materials, verifying product quality, evaluating product safety for human health and the environment, and respecting regulatory requirements. The program also aims to provide students with knowledge of marketing and communication aspects specific to the cosmetic industry.

Cursus

The program is organized into two periods:

  • From September to the end of January: 5 modules taught by specialists from the academic and industrial worlds, covering topics such as:
    • Biology of the skin and mucous membranes and clinical dermatology
    • Technology of cosmetic forms
    • Knowledge of raw materials and control methods
    • Regulatory, ethical, and commercial aspects
    • Undesirable effects and toxic risks
  • From February to July: a 6-month internship in a company or research laboratory, where students will work on a personal project.

Admission Criteria

The program is accessible to anyone holding a Master's degree in Pharmacy, Medicine, Biomedical Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Bioengineering, or Veterinary Sciences, obtained in the French Community of Belgium, Flanders, or a university in a European Union country. Admission is conditional, with an examination of applications by an admission jury, and may require a complementary module to upgrade knowledge.

Career Opportunities

The skills acquired during the program offer graduates a wide range of career opportunities, including:

  • Research and development laboratories in the cosmetic industry
  • Research and development laboratories in the chemical industry
  • Small and medium-sized enterprises that design and market cosmetic products
  • Regulatory bodies and professional organizations
  • Information, communication, and marketing sectors
