Program Overview

Introduction to the Doctoral Program

The doctoral program at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) is designed to provide students with advanced research training in their chosen field. The program is tailored to meet the specific needs of each student, with a focus on developing their research skills and expertise.

Before Registration

The first step in pursuing a doctoral degree is to find a supervisor who will oversee the student's research. Students can contact potential supervisors directly, based on their research interests and expertise. The university's research units and laboratories can be consulted to determine the areas of research being developed at the ULB.

Doctoral Training

The doctoral training program is designed to strengthen the student's disciplinary specialization and develop valuable skills for the academic and professional worlds. The program consists of 60 credits, which are acquired through a combination of:

  • Scientific training specific to the discipline, including activities organized by the thematic doctoral school, courses, seminars, conferences, and summer schools
  • Scientific production, including communications at conferences, publication of articles, and progress reports on research
  • Transversal training, accessible to all doctoral students

The acquisition of the 60 credits of doctoral training gives the right to a Certificate of Research Training, which is required at the time of thesis submission.

Doctoral School

The Doctoral School of Human Motor Sciences (EDSM) aims to promote, on an inter-university scale, a doctoral training that meets the dual requirement of research specialization and multidisciplinary openness.
