Special Topics in Biomedical Research Postgraduate Program in Biomedical Sciences
Program Overview
Postgraduate Program in Biomedical Sciences
The Postgraduate Program in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Patras is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of current biomedical research. The program consists of several courses, including Special Topics in Biomedical Research, which is described in detail below.
Course Description
The Special Topics in Biomedical Research course is coordinated by Professor C. Stathopoulos and Assistant Professor V. Tzounakas. The purpose of this course is to provide postgraduate students with a critical comprehension of topics related to current biomedical research.
Course Content
The course consists of three sections:
- 1st Section: This section is supervised by C. Mikelis and M. Denaxa. Students are familiarized with ethical issues concerning the usage of small mammalian animals in research, comprehend the guidelines for the protection of animals used in research, handle laboratory animals, learn how to formulate a research protocol with experiments on animals, acquire knowledge of the safety and healthcare rules in the animal model facility, and understand the fundamental principles for the creation of transgenic animals.
- 2nd Section: This section is supervised by V. Tzounakas and K. Nika. Students learn how to work in a research environment and use biological samples and chemical compounds safely, how to use radioactive compounds, and how to apply good practices for water and electrical energy usage and the use of chemical or biological materials.
- 3rd Section: This section is supervised by C. Stathopoulos and V. Stamatopoulou. Students are exposed to research topics from different fields in Biomedical Sciences, presented by acclaimed scientists from Greece and abroad as well as members of the Teaching and Research Staff of the University of Patras.
