The Ireland: Beautiful World: A Writers Journey in Ireland program is a hybrid program that combines two weeks of immersive travel in Ireland with flexible online learning prior to departure. Students will explore Ireland's remarkable transformation over the past fifty years through literature, history, and site visits connected to key moments of change.

Program Details

Overview

This program blends two weeks of immersive travel in Ireland with flexible online learning prior to departure. Students will examine how Ireland has grappled with colonialism, religious intolerance, and gender inequality while also embracing cultural renewal. Visits to Dublin and rural towns linked to celebrated writers bring these themes to life.

  • Physical Activity: The program will require moderate to extensive walking and standing to participate in tours, museum visits, and general daily activities.

Living Arrangements

Students will be housed in shared hotel rooms and hostels during the program.


Program Dates

The program dates are May 17-31, 2026. Students will need to depart the US on May 16th to arrive in Dublin by May 18th.


Academics

Students will earn a total of 4 credits and choose one of the following courses:


  • In the spring, students will select a 3 credit hour course from the options below:

    • ENG 3350 (Irish Literature)

  • In the summer, students will take a 1 credit hour course:

Eligibility

This program is open to all undergraduate Ohio University students with a sophomore, junior, or senior class standing who have successfully completed ENG 1510. The minimum GPA for admission consideration is 3.0. Students who will be on probation at any point during the program for a conduct offense that took place less than a calendar year from the program start date may not study abroad.


Application Requirements

Applicants are required to submit:


  • A statement of purpose, no longer than 500 words
  • A copy of their DARS or unofficial transcript
  • The name and contact information of one reference An interview with the directors is required.

Entry and Exit Requirements

U.S. citizens are required to have a valid U.S. passport when traveling outside of the United States. U.S. citizens will not need a visa or other special document to enter the country for the length of this program.
