Program Overview
Introduction to the Japan Study Abroad Program
The Japan Study Abroad program, facilitated by Ohio University's long-standing relationship with Chubu University in Japan, offers various opportunities for students, including study abroad, exchange, and a special service project in Iwate Prefecture. This program is designed for students of all Japanese proficiency levels and includes courses in Japanese, as well as field trips and excursions.
Program Details
Eligibility and Requirements
Applicants must have at least one year of college Japanese or the equivalent and possess a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA.
Timing and Duration
The program is available during the Fall, Spring, Summer, Semester, and Academic Year.
Academic Credit and Cost
Students can earn Ohio credit and/or exchange credit. Associated costs are provided, and scholarships are available, with the possibility of applying financial aid.
Program Structure
Qualified extended-stay students who successfully complete one semester of full-time Japanese study in the fall may be eligible for internship opportunities and tutorial programs in Engineering, the Natural Sciences, and Humanities during the spring semester.
The Iwate Global Engagement Project
This opportunity began in September 2011, following the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami in Northeast Japan. In collaboration with Iwate Prefectural University (IPU), students from OHIO and Chubu join IPU students on community engagement and service learning projects during the last week of September each year.
