Air Force ROTC Program Overview ##"
The Air Force ROTC program is a college program designed to train and commission leaders into the United States Air Force. The program is typically four years in length, but can be altered to a minimum of three years for students who join after their freshman year. To be eligible for the program, undergraduate students must have at least three or more years remaining in their undergraduate studies. If a student has less than three years remaining towards their undergraduate degree, Officer Training School (OTS) is the best option for those seeking a commission.
Program Requirements
- Cadets are required to participate in two to three physical training (PT) sessions each week.
- The overall goal for PT is to ensure cadets can pass the Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA), which includes a 1.5-mile run, 1 minute of push-ups, 1 minute of sit-ups, and body composition requirements as established by the Department of the Air Force Physical Fitness standards.
- Except for their last semester in the program, cadets must maintain full-time student status of 12 credit hours (including AFROTC classes).
- Cadets may work on minors or dual majors but cannot work on graduate studies without AFROTC HQ approval.
- Cadets must also meet service age requirements.
Scholarship Opportunities and Financial Incentives
- The Air Force ROTC High School Scholarship Program (HSSP) offers various capped and uncapped scholarship types to high school seniors.
- To be eligible for the HSSP, applicants must have a minimum unweighted cumulative GPA of 3.3, a minimum ACT score of 28 or SAT score of 1310, complete a Physical Fitness test, and complete a medical review process.
- The In-College Scholarship Program (ICSP) offers competitive scholarships to current college students based on merit and degree type.
- Ohio University has partnered with AFROTC Det 650 to help offset the cost of room and boarding for cadets who maintain a high GPA, high physical fitness standards, and high moral character.
- All cadets who contract with the Air Force will receive a monthly stipend, with the amount depending on the year the cadet is in.
Commitment to the Air Force
- Cadets are not committed to the Air Force until they complete Field Training (with the exception of cadets who have been awarded Air Force Scholarships, who contract upon acceptance).
- After completing Field Training, cadets will contract into the Delayed Entry Program prior to the start of their third year.
- Once they have graduated, they will be commissioned into the active duty Air Force, with a minimum service commitment of 4 years, which may extend to 7-10 years for certain career fields.
Majors and Career Fields
- Cadets may pursue any major the University offers.
- Certain career fields require specific degrees (e.g., Civil Engineers require a Civil Engineering degree).
- Science, Technical, Engineering, and Math (STEM) majors are more competitive for scholarships.
- Examples of career fields and corresponding majors include:
- Acquisitions Officer: Business, Finance, Human Resources, Liberal Arts, Acquisitions
- Contracting Officer: Business, Finance, Human Resources, Liberal Arts, Acquisitions
- Force Management Officer: Business, Finance, Human Resources, Liberal Arts, Acquisitions
- Finance Officer: Business, Finance, Human Resources, Liberal Arts, Acquisitions
