Program Overview
Introduction to the Jumpstart Program
The Jumpstart program is a scientific research skills building program designed for juniors and seniors attending high school in New York City. It takes place across the spring and summer, providing a combined after-school and summer hands-on research experience on campus at The Rockefeller University.
Program Overview
The Jumpstart program supports 16 high school students in a combined after-school and summer hands-on laboratory research experience. The program spans two phases: the first phase involves after-school sessions, and the second phase involves full-time participation in the Summer Science Research Program (SSRP). The program aims to promote the development of scientific thinking and research skills through talks, workshops, and individual mentorship.
Program Structure
- Phase One (Spring Session): After-school sessions meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4:30pm 7pm, from February 26 to June 11. Students develop scientific questions, gain exposure to research skills and primary literature, and connect with scientist-mentors.
- Phase Two (Summer Session / SSRP): Students participate in the SSRP, spending up to 35 hours per week from June 22 to August 6. They learn the foundations and experimental techniques necessary to carry out a research project.
Eligibility and Expectations
To be eligible, students must be enrolled as juniors or seniors in an NYC high school and be at least 16 years old at the start of the program. Students accepted into the Jumpstart program must commit to participating for the entirety of the program, including both the spring after-school and summer portions.
Application Process
- Complete the online application by the specified deadline.
- Selected applicants will be invited for an interview over Zoom.
- Students will be notified in February if they are accepted into the Jumpstart program.
Additional Details
- The program is facilitated by Rockefeller trainees with support from RockEDU staff.
- Each student is paired with a Jumpstart Advocate, a practicing scientist providing educational and professional support beyond laboratory mentorship.
- Students without prior research experience and/or those who have been excluded from adequate STEM opportunities are strongly encouraged to apply.
Program Goals
The Jumpstart program aims to develop scientific thinking and research skills in high school students through a hands-on laboratory research experience, preparing them for future careers in science and research.
