Introduction to the Joint PhD Program
The Beijing University of Technology's Marxist Academy and Lingnan University's Graduate School in Hong Kong are collaborating to offer a joint PhD program in Sociology and/or Social Policy. This program aims to foster high-level talent and promote cooperation between Beijing University of Technology and Hong Kong's higher education institutions.
Overview of Participating Institutions
1. Lingnan University and its Graduate School
Lingnan University is undergoing a transformation, shifting its focus from liberal arts education to a broader range of high-quality education, with an emphasis on research. The university strives to cultivate students' critical thinking and digital literacy, preparing them for the challenges of the modern world. As one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in Hong Kong and a member of the Beijing-Hong Kong University Alliance, Lingnan University has traditionally excelled in the humanities, business, and social sciences. The university is also developing its research capabilities in emerging fields like data science and artificial intelligence, leading to the creation of new interdisciplinary research areas.
2. Beijing University of Technology and its Marxist Academy
Beijing University of Technology, founded in 1960, is a multidisciplinary university with a strong focus on engineering, covering nine disciplines, including engineering, science, economics, management, literature, law, education, art, and interdisciplinary studies. The university has a long history of academic excellence, having been approved as one of the first institutions to grant master's and doctoral degrees in 1981 and 1985, respectively. The Marxist Academy at Beijing University of Technology has two first-level discipline master's degree authorization points in Marxist theory and education, as well as one professional master's degree authorization point in education.
Joint PhD Program Details
1. Admission and Enrollment
- Program: PhD in Sociology and/or Social Policy
- Enrollment: 2-3 students
- Admission Process: Recommendation, application, and interview
2. Application Requirements
- Eligibility: Applicants with a master's degree in related fields (e.g., education, Marxist theory, sociology, foreign languages, law) or young teachers who meet specific conditions.
- Academic Foundation: Solid professional theory foundation, strong logical thinking, and good research potential.
- Publications: Priority given to applicants with academic papers published in core domestic or international journals.
- Language Proficiency: Minimum TOEFL score of 79 or IELTS score of 6.5.
3. Program Structure and Funding
- Duration: 3 years
- Tuition Fees: HK$100,000 per year, payable to Lingnan University, with annual adjustments according to the university's mechanisms.
- Scholarships: Both universities provide scholarships to support PhD students.
- During the first 1.5 years at Lingnan University, students receive a monthly stipend of HK$5,400.
- During the research period at Beijing University of Technology, students may receive economic support from their supervisor or academic discipline.
4. Degree Award
Upon completing the required courses and passing the doctoral dissertation defense, students are awarded a PhD in Sociology and/or Social Policy by Lingnan University.
5. Application Materials and Procedure
Applicants must submit a registration form, research plan, personal resume, and other relevant materials. The application process involves recommendation by Beijing University of Technology's Marxist Academy, application to Lingnan University, and a joint interview by both universities to select qualified applicants.
