Introduction to the Joint PhD Program
The Beijing University of Technology's Marxist Academy and Lingnan University's Graduate School in Hong Kong are collaborating to offer a joint PhD program in Sociology and/or Social Policy. This program aims to foster high-level talent and promote cooperation between Beijing and Hong Kong in higher education.

1. Lingnan University and its Graduate School
Lingnan University is undergoing a transformation, shifting from a focus on liberal arts education to a broader range of high-quality education, with an emphasis on research. The university strives to develop students' critical thinking and digital literacy skills, preparing them for the challenges of the modern world. Lingnan University is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in Hong Kong and is a member of the Beijing-Hong Kong University Alliance, along with Beijing University of Technology. The university has a strong foundation in humanities, business, and social sciences, and is expanding its research capabilities in emerging fields such as data science and artificial intelligence.
2. Beijing University of Technology and its Marxist Academy
Beijing University of Technology is a multidisciplinary university with a focus on engineering, covering nine disciplines, including engineering, science, economics, management, literature, law, education, art, and interdisciplinary studies. The university has a strong research profile, with 10 disciplines ranked among the top 500 in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, and 11 disciplines ranked among the top 1% in the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) rankings. The Marxist Academy at Beijing University of Technology has two master's degree programs in Marxist theory and education, and is a key institution for the study of Marxist theory and education in Beijing.
Joint PhD Program Details
1. Program Overview
- Program Name: PhD in Sociology and/or Social Policy
- Duration: 3 years
- Enrollment: 2-3 students per year
- Degree Awarded: PhD in Sociology and/or Social Policy from Lingnan University
2. Admission Requirements
- Eligibility: Master's degree holders or equivalent in relevant fields (e.g., education, Marxist theory, sociology, foreign languages, law)
- Language Requirements: TOEFL (79) or IELTS (6.5)
- Research Experience: Priority given to applicants with academic publications in core journals
- Other Requirements: Strong professional theoretical foundation, logical thinking, and research potential
3. Program Structure
- First 1.5 years: Study at Lingnan University, completing required courses and research
- Remaining 1.5 years: Study and research at Beijing University of Technology's Marxist Academy
- Supervision: Joint supervision by academics from both universities
- Assessment: Mid-term evaluation and final report
4. Tuition Fees and Scholarships
- Tuition Fees: HK$100,000 per year, payable to Lingnan University
- Scholarships: Both universities offer scholarships to support students' living expenses and research
5. Application Procedure
- Application Period: Opens in November, with a deadline in December
- Application Materials: Research proposal, personal statement, and other supporting documents
- Selection Process: Recommendation by Beijing University of Technology's Marxist Academy, followed by application and interview at Lingnan University
6. Degree Awarded
Upon completion of the program, students will be awarded a PhD in Sociology and/or Social Policy from Lingnan University.
