Program Overview
Bachelor of Education (BEd)
The Bachelor of Education (BEd) programme is an initial teacher training programme offered by the School of Education at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. The programme is designed to prepare teachers who are caring, accountable, and critically reflective about the who, what, how, and why of teaching in a diversity of contexts.
Programme Overview
The BEd programme is a four-year, vocationally specific, professional degree that integrates both academic study and professional preparation required to be a teacher. Successful completion of the programme qualifies students for registration with the South African Council for Educators (SACE) and for employment in South African schools as an educator at REQV level 14.
Specializations Offered
The BEd programme offers three specializations:
- Foundation phase (grade 1-3): Specializing in:
- isiZulu (Home language or first additional language)
- English (Home language or First additional language)
- Life Skills
- Mathematics
- Intermediate phase (grades 4-6): Specializing in:
- Mathematics and Social Sciences OR
- Natural Science/Technology and Social Science
- Senior (grade 7-9) and Further Education and training phase (Grade 10-12): Specializing in one of the following 16 options:
- FET Accounting and Senior phase Economic Management Science and Creative arts
- FET Accounting and senior phase Economic Management Science and Mathematics
- FET Computer Science and Senior phase Technology Education and Mathematics
- FET English and Senior phase English and Economic Management Science
- FET English and Senior phase English and Social Science
- FET History and Senior phase Social science and English
- FET History and Senior phase Social Science and isiZulu
- FET History and Senior phase Social Science and Life orientation
- FET Information Systems and Senior phase Technology and Economic Management Science
- FET Information Systems and Senior phase Technology and Mathematics
- FET isiZulu and Senior phase isiZulu and Economic Management Science

Entry Requirements
The entry requirements for the BEd programme are as follows:
- BEd (Foundation Phase): NSC-Bachelor's Degree endorsement with English & Life Orientation 4; isiZulu 4, Mathematics 4 OR Math Literacy 5 and two subjects 3
- BEd (Intermediate Phase): NSC- Bachelor's Degree endorsement with English & Life Orientation 4; isiZulu level 4; Level 5 in any two of Maths, Maths Literacy, Technology, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, History, Dramatic Arts, Geography
- BEd (Senior Phase/Further Education & Training): NSC- Bachelor's Degree endorsement with English & Life Orientation 4; Level 5 in any two of Maths, Dramatic Arts, Geography, History, Accounting, Information Technology, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences
Admission Criteria
Preliminary admission is based on the results obtained in the final Grade 11 examination. Final admission is based on the final Grade 12 results.
Funding
The tuition fee for the BEd programme is approximately R38,970. Application for financial assistance can be done through the National Student Financial Aid Scheme or private financial companies such as Edu-Loan.
