Program Overview
UKZN STEM Programme
The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), through the School of Education's Community Engagement initiative, has made a meaningful contribution to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education in 2025.
Programme Overview
This year, the programme was successfully delivered in partnership with the Environment and Language Education Trust (ELET), with generous funding support from BANKSETA. The initiative focused on providing additional tuition in Mathematics and Physical Science to 30 Grade 12 learners from four schools in the Umlazi District.
Programme Objectives
The core objective of the programme was to increase the number of learners achieving strong Bachelor passes in the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations. By doing so, it aims to open more opportunities for learners to pursue tertiary studies in science-related fields, a crucial step for South Africa as the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) continues to reshape global economies and societies.
Programme Structure
Sessions were hosted at Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) over 12 Saturdays, ensuring that learners received consistent and high-quality academic support. The programme achieved outstanding results, with learner attendance averaging above 90%. Tuition was facilitated by the Centre for the Advancement of Science and Mathematics Education (CASME), whose experienced educators provided focused support that significantly boosted learners' confidence in both Mathematics and Physical Science.
Programme Outcomes
Feedback from participants highlighted the immense value of the programme, with many learners expressing that they now feel better prepared to excel in their final examinations. To conclude the 12-day programme, learners participated in a career guidance workshop, equipping them with practical insights as they consider their post-matric study and career options. In recognition of their commitment and hard work, each learner was awarded a certificate of achievement.
Programme Impact
Speaking on the impact of the initiative, UKZN highlighted the importance of investing in learners at this critical stage of their academic journey. "By strengthening STEM education at school level, we are directly contributing to the future of innovation, skills development, and knowledge creation in South Africa," said Professor Angela James. The programme demonstrates the impact of collaboration between universities, NGOs, funders, and schools in shaping the futures of young South Africans. UKZN and its partners extend their best wishes to the learners as they prepare for their final NSC examinations and take their next steps into Higher Education.
