Introduction to the Skills for the Future Programme

The University of KwaZulu-Natal's School of Education, in collaboration with the Banking Sector Education and Training Authority (BANKSETA), has launched a comprehensive program aimed at enhancing the skills of Grade 12 students. This initiative, known as the Skills for the Future Programme, is designed to bridge the gap between education and the demands of the digital age, ensuring that students are well-equipped to succeed in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR).

Program Objectives and Structure

The program focuses on teaching and mentoring students in digital literacy, career preparation, and entrepreneurship. With the support of the UKZN Foundation, it targets students from disadvantaged backgrounds in KwaZulu-Natal, providing them with the necessary skills to excel in the 4IR. The program is led by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Teaching and Learning, Professor Thabo Msibi, and the Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Phumlani Myende.

Key Components of the Program

• Digital literacy training to equip students with essential computer skills, including programming, software development, and problem-solving.
• Career preparation and mentorship to guide students in their future careers, particularly in the banking and technology sectors.
• Entrepreneurship training to foster innovation and entrepreneurship among participants.

Mentorship and Support

A significant component of the program is the mentorship aspect, facilitated in partnership with the Community Development Association Foundation (CDAF). This component aims to connect students with successful university students and professionals in the banking sector, providing ongoing support and guidance as they navigate their educational and professional journeys.

Outcomes and Benefits

Upon completion of the program, participants receive certificates of competence and are invited to visit the UKZN campus. Plans are also underway to establish an alumni club for program graduates, serving as a platform for continuous networking, support, and tracking of their progress.
