Counter Improvised Explosive Device Capability Course
The Counter Improvised Explosive Device Capability course is designed to educate and inform students, industry, military, and civilian MoD C-IED and Counter Threat professionals in a system engineering and critical thinking approach to the Counter IED/Threat systems.
Course Overview
The aim of the course is to provide contextual knowledge on the development and use of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and the tactics, techniques, and procedures used to counter the threat they present.

What You Will Learn
On successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Evaluate the benefit of C-IED activities with respect to Prepare the Force, Attack the Network, and Defeat the Device
- Predict the impact of new technologies on threat
- Analyse the development of IED threats
- Recommend a strategy to counter an adversary's IED/Threat systems
Core Content
Subjects covered will include:
- The C-IED approach in accordance with JDP 3-65(AJP-3.15(C)) and other civilian and military approaches
- Understanding the development of IED threats based on historical perspective and how these have been countered
- Technologies involved in C-IED across Detect, Neutralise, Mitigate, and Exploit
- How to present information to senior and specialist staff on C-Threat
- The importance of 'Understand' and information management to maintain effectiveness
- Application of influence activities to C-Threat
- Analysing adversary IED/threat systems and identifying points of influence and effect
Upgrade to a Professional Qualification
When taken as a Short Course for Credit, 10 credit points can be put towards the Explosives Ordnance Engineering MSc.
Who Should Attend
The course is designed for military and civilian MOD staff and approved industry personnel with contextual knowledge on the development and use of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and the tactics, techniques, and procedures used to counter the threat they present.
Prerequisites
Students must have successfully completed the Introduction to Explosives Engineering course or have relevant experience in order to take this as a Short Course for Credit. There are no prerequisites if taken as a Standalone Short Course.
Accommodation
This course is non-residential. Delegates will need to make their own arrangements at a nearby hotel.
Location and Travel
Cranfield Defence and Security (CDS) is a Cranfield School based at the Ministry of Defence establishment on the Oxfordshire/Wiltshire borders. Shrivenham itself lies in the picturesque Vale of the White Horse, close to the M4 motorway which links London and South Wales.
